While speaking "the language inglese!

A catchy title (recalling the difficulty for English speakers to differentiate between female and male) who relates well to that of Stéphane Laporte this morning in La Presse ( Yes, I speak French! ) It is amazing how the quality of the language diminishes in Quebec. Far be it from me to pretend to say that I speak better than others, but at least I admit I make mistakes in writing and speaking. Even our beloved CBC journalists, some of which praise the quality of language can make mistakes. My girlfriend is always outraged to hear that journalists are not able to match their past participles with BE.

In region the quality of French is greatly affected by the proximity of Ottawa on the other side of river. Many students do not care at all about the quality of their spoken French, let alone their written French. Franglais is really present, even among some teachers.

I can understand that between friends, the weekend over a good meal, the quality of language is our last concern, but when I hear some of my colleagues tell their students to pay attention to their writing when the documents supplied to them are filled with errors, I would jump into the air or they ask them to "safe" to write their name, there are limits.

Some allow themselves to question the education reform to say that the quality of education and language down, but when parents can not write without three errors in a sentence of 5 words, it is difficult to blame the education reform. Let's start with make sure we control our language before forcing others to do the same thing.

11 life lessons

In these times when our students claim to have less work to do to succeed and to have better results, this little text that drags on my desk for a month already seemed very appropriate. I'll probably hang it in my classroom for my students to see.

Here are some advice recently by Bill Gates during a speech at a high school and discusses 11 lessons that students have learned and will not learn in school

Rule 1: Life is not fair, you must do.
Rule 2: The world does not care your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you're feeling good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT 40,000 dollars a year right out of high school. You will not be vice-president with a car phone until you have earned and deserved both.
Rule 4: If you think that your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word to describe what kind of job, they called it "open doors".
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so do not complain of your lot and pull into the rather necessary lessons.
Rule 7: Before your birth, your parents were not as boring as they are today. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your underwear and listen to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try to put some order in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have ceased to distinguish winners from losers, but not life. In some schools, they eliminated the pass mark and they will give you as many chances as you want before you find the right answer. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters You do not get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you to find you. Do this in your spare time.
Rule 10: The Television is NOT real life. In life, in reality, people must leave the restaurant and return to work.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are that you end up working for one of them.

I posted the rules in one of my classes by telling students to read. Reaction of one of them: "It's ridiculous, he went to school and said that the same young they believe, what to report. In addition, the latter is really about his own life I guess ... he looks a little nerds! "
